Casinos from Detroit have reported higher earnings in the month of May, and many believe this is due to the ongoing strikes at Caesars Windsor, which has forced many casino players to instead look elsewhere for their gambling needs.
Some of the casinos that have reportedly benefited from the strike include MotorCity, Greektown, and MGM Grand Detroit. The strike was ongoing for a period of two months, with union members refusing to work for a total of 60 days while they and the casino worked on reaching a mutual agreement that both parties were happy with.
Analysts have told reporters that the two month strike has the potential to change the way some gamblers view casinos that have been shut down for any length of time. They warn Caesars Windsor that the strike could cause many customers to lose their loyalty to the casino, and may begin looking at other venues that are within a certain proximity.
Caesars Windsor has only recently opened their doors once again to patrons after proposed contract amendments were finally agreed upon by the union members. Before that, the casino was completely closed to patrons, and many planned events were forced to cancel.
Detroit casinos, on the other hand, were the closest available gambling venues for many Canadians, which meant many of them crossing the border to make use of the various machines and table games. This has lead to an overall increase of revenue for Detroit casinos, up 1.2 percent from last year.
